  4. What is            In building hypertext systems, I've come to the conclusion
  5. expertise?         that there are at least three kinds of expertise:
  6. ==========         fundamental, operative, and access.  I define these
  7.                    categories of expertise as follows:

  17. Which is most      Of the three types of expertise, understanding why people
  18. important?         want to access knowledge is the most important thing to know

  21.                    Good hypertext systems match the needs of users by
  22.                    displaying desired information with a minimum number of
  23.                    keystrokes, regardless of the initial understanding of the
  24.                    subject area.  For example, if you've answered technical
  25.                    questions for some time over the phone, you'll know the
  26.                    various abilities of the potential users of your system as
  27.                    well as the best way to explain the information.

  29. Automatic          If you have this background, you can build good hypertext
  30. hypertext          systems in your sleep.  However, if you lack this
  31. =========          experience, here's the alternative approach.

  35.                    hierarchies such that each hierarchy is directly suited to
  36.                    the needs of specific users to easily find whatever

  40. expert systems     seminars and courses at UC Berkeley taught by Lofta Zeda
  41. ==============     (pioneer of fuzzy logic), building an good 100-rule expert
  42.                    system <link64> typically takes 2 years and a lot of effort.

  44.                    The problem is that the builders of expert systems have
  45.                    confused access expertise with judgement expertise.

  47. Hypertext as an    However, if I separate these two forms of expertise, I can

  49. =============      a day using MaxThink and the PERM program of HyperLink.

  51.                    Hypertext simply provides rapid access to expert-level
  52.                    information to help users quickly make expert-level
  53.                    decisions.  While not providing automatic browsing (AI),
  54.                    hypertext does provide sensitivity analysis on the
  55.                    validity of the information presented (something not found
  56.                    in AI).

  58.                    While a this is a complex issue, hypertext can replace most
  59.                    visions of expert systems.  Call for details.
